At the end of the 3rd – the beginning of the 4th century after the Nativity of Christ, Saint and Wonderworker Spyridon, Bishop of Trimifuntsky, lived on the island of Cyprus. Saint Spyridon was born in an ordinary poor family. He himself was a simple and illiterate sheep shepherd, distinguished by his faith in God, humility and mercy. He was married, in marriage, his wife gave him a daughter, named Mira. When he became a widow, he completely turned to God and became His preacher. The reputation that he acquired during his lifetime was so great that when the previous Bishop of Trimyphus died, the believing people themselves unanimously proclaimed him the new bishop. Even then, St. Spyridon did not stand out from the rest of the poor people who made up his flock. He was still just as simply dressed in shabby clothes as before, and everyone also saw a hat woven from willow twigs on his head. He lived poorly, but always, he shared everything he had with poor and needy people. Everywhere and always he walked, was engaged in rural work and continued, like a good shepherd, to guard his flock. His reputation grew even more when miracles began to happen to people who asked for his help.
